flames rip through a large house in washington tonight. neighbors a mile away engulfed in smoke. several streets have been shut down. good evening. i'm jim vance. doenre htig fserle ire cinha rgeidodoahain bridge road in northwest. about from american from ameri. news l .eaiered rn ws 4 learned a house on fire a belongs to the family of former d.c. school board president, craig melvin is on the scene with more. craig? >> jim, good evening to you. left the house, 15, 20 minutes. flames shooting from the roof. smoke thick in the air. want to bring in d.c. fire chief, let's get the latest. you have 150 fire fighters. >> we do. second alarm. hot, humid. fire fighters are working extremely hard. at this point they have the fire pretty well contained. but still working to develop an appropriate water supply to be able to complely ex-teng witing

this fire. >> total loss? >> looks like a total loss. >> it's early. >> we have our task force on location. fire investigation. lead agency being our fire department. along with metropolitan police, alcohol, tobao, firearms. and explosives. a week worth of investigation here. before we come up with a hard core determination. as the members began rushing up to the second floor with the hose line. water supply went dim. had to back out. overwhelmed by the fire. and we called an exterior attack. we do not believe any one is in the home. there are four residents. we have been able to speak to all four. >> stand by, chief. just mentioned the neighbors. i spoke with one of the neighbors. in fact. right next door. watching it burn since 8:00. peter gillman. let's listen to what he had to say. >> i am just devastated.

peggy, and -- huge art collector. priceless collection of art in the house. absolutely gone. we were able to rescue the dogs, we have the dogs here. and really sad. >> called the fire department. they were here, within about 10 minutes. and, one thing about the house, connected. it took at least a half-hour for them to get any water pressure at all into the hoses. and by then, there was a huge concentration. and then, minimal water pressure. we had water pressure problems on the streets. months and months. in fact yesterday we had no water at all. >> back live here. chief reuben, we just heard there, we just heard there from the neighbor who mentioned it appeared that fire fighters had a difficult time with water pressure. any rinse to that?

>> we did have a difficult time. the hose streams weren't developed enough. not getting enough supply. one fire hydrant we are sure was out of service. we were aware it had been tested. we knew it was out of service. the other hydrants weren't able to develop enough pressure. exactly why we were not sure. we asked a supervisor to come out. certain they will be checking into it. hoping by tomorrow, next day there will be details as to what happened with the water supply issues. >> chief, thank you so much. as you mentioned, as the neighbor mentioned. and peggy cooper, one of d.c.'s best known community activists. she, of course, started duke ellington high school for performing arts. president of d.c. schools, back around 2000, synonymous with philanthropy. collector of art. in fact the collection said to be so impressive it was featured in "o" magazine last month. chief reuben told us a short time ago. it appears at this point as if

the restaurant. he was once a police officer in el salvador. >> in spanish he describes how the suspects ambushed the two as they walked along the lane, a few feet from the safety of home. one of the suspects placed a pistol to his head while the other pulled a knife on his brother. the robbers demanded money and cell phones. there was a struggle. his brother watched in horror as he was fatally stabbed in the abdomen. police say there was a similar robbery on the same quiet block long residential street july 17th, two men also employees who lived in the same house as the gutierrez brothers were robbed. one had a stinging substance sprayed in his face. outrage over the crime is so strong, that charles county sheriff, rex coffee has ordered an additional $5,000 added to the existing $1,000 crime solvers reward. in waldorf, jackie benson, news 4. pregnant women among the

first in line for swine flu vaccine. today, a government panel came out with recommendations on who should be given priority for the vaccines in the fall. also on that list, health care workers, infants, their care-giver adults with high risk medical conditions and young adults age 19-24. schools in montgomery county decided to provide swine flu and seasonal flu vaccines to allan students. there are more than 137,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in the county. school officials will disperse the seasonal flu shot after school begins then give out the swine flu vaccine when available likely to be in october or november. the shots will be offered for free, but they will not be mandatory. we are now just a few hours away from the training camp opening. there are big questions and big hopes for the team this year. as there are every year. and more on this now, dan? >> we're curious to see if the

the woman whose 911 call sparked the arrest of the harvard professor, stepped forward to defend herself. lucia whalen says she was incorrectly quoted in the police report from the incident. the arresting officer, sergeant james crowley said in his report

unusually hot. there is the jet pattern. allowed the humidity to be in on us. there are those lingering showers. still maybe one or two rumbles of thunder. there you can see what was left in the future scan. for any showers south of fredericksburg. charles, saint mary's county may hear the rumble of thunder. a little batch coming through. a spot down south of fredericksburg. up into baltimore. that is moving off. still a few lingering showers. look at hollywood, maryland. over an inch of rain. almost an inch of rain in hollywood. wind, 25 miles an hour. saint mary's county, boy, in charles calvert, calling again today. those are the areas that were under tornado warning. good news. no reports of any tornadoes or damn j. ov -- damage. tonight, the showers move off. we'll be back into the heat.
